Abbey R. Lacheen is a partner and the workers’ compensation practice leader for Chartwell’s New Jersey office. She focuses her practice exclusively on workers’ compensation defense litigation, representing self-insured employers, insurance carriers, businesses, and organizations across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. With over two decades of experience, Abbey has developed a reputation for her strategic approach and commitment to her clients, which include mid-sized regional businesses as well as some of the largest corporations in the United States.
Abbey’s practice encompasses handling the intricate issues that arise in cross-border and multi-jurisdictional workers’ compensation cases, providing counsel on the evolving landscape of COVID-19 and presumptive laws affecting national employers, and determining Medicare Set-Aside fund allocations for future medical expenses related to work injuries. For large organizations, she coordinates counsel throughout the country.
Abbey’s pragmatic and client-centered approach ensures that each client receives tailored, responsive, and cost-effective representation, making her a trusted advisor and partner. Known for taking a personal interest in her clients’ businesses, Abbey treats them as if they were her own and consistently aligns her strategies with their goals. She believes in partnering with clients, developing collaborative relationships that create trust and achieve optimal outcomes.
Abbey’s leadership within Chartwell is noteworthy. She was one of the first female equity partners at the firm and serves as the managing partner of its New Jersey practice. Additionally, she is a member of the firm’s administrative management committee, the workers’ compensation coordinator for the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York offices, and an integral part of the firm’s Medicare Set-Aside team. Abbey is also active in mentoring new attorneys and leading Chartwell’s legal education outreach initiatives.
An accomplished speaker and author, Abbey frequently presents at educational seminars and training sessions for self-insured employers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators on various aspects of workers’ compensation claims. Most recently, she presented at National Comp 2024 in Las Vegas on the topic “Uniting Against Workplace Violence: Cross-Sector Strategies and Solutions.” She has also participated in the Annual National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference and the National RIMS Conference and is a recurring speaker at the New Jersey Self-Insurers’ Association’s annual conference, where she has presented on “Case Law & Legislative Update.”
As an active member of Chartwell’s DEI committee, Abbey champions initiatives that promote diversity and inclusive practices within the firm and the broader legal community. Her academic background includes a J.D. from Widener University School of Law (2003) and a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University (2000). Abbey’s dedication to her clients, combined with her extensive knowledge and leadership roles, positions her as a powerful advocate and an influential figure in the field of workers’ compensation law.
Outside of her professional life, Abbey enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two daughters, whether at the beach or in the Pocono Mountains. She also loves cheering on her daughters at soccer matches and volleyball games, and staying healthy and active as an enthusiastic CrossFit athlete.
