Michael Cuches is a skilled trial attorney with a proven track record of success in both civil and criminal litigation. Having taken nearly 50 jury trials to verdict, he brings extensive courtroom experience to his role as a Partner at Chartwell, where he represents businesses and individuals in all aspects of litigation. His practice includes food and beverage liability, hospitality, premises liability, product liability, transportation, employment, construction defects, and sports and recreation-related claims.
Michael’s legal career began in Massachusetts, where he represented clients in business law, real estate transactions, and corporate entity formation prior to moving to Maryland, where he started out as a Judicial Law Clerk in the Circuit Court for Queen Anne’s County. He then gained invaluable trial experience as an Assistant State’s Attorney, eventually rising to Deputy State’s Attorney. During his tenure as a prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases, including serious felonies, before judges and juries. This background has given him a deep understanding of trial strategy, evidentiary issues, and courtroom dynamics—skills that continue to benefit his clients in private practice.
Prior to joining Chartwell, Michael advised businesses on risk management, contract disputes, human resource issues, and complex litigation matters. His work in multi-party litigation, construction defect claims, and personal injury defense has earned him recognition among his peers. He has been named a “Leading Lawyer in Criminal Defense” by What’s Up Magazine and was selected as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in Civil Litigation in 2014 and 2015.
Michael is admitted to practice in Maryland and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He earned his J.D. from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2005 and his B.A. from Radford University in 2001. He is a current member of the Queen Anne’s County Bar Association, where he previously served as Vice President (2017–2018) and President (2019–2021). He lives in Baltimore County with his wife and son.
A recent notable outcome in Michael’s civil litigation work includes Shila Zayanderoudi v. National Railroad Passenger Corporation, TJS-22-2455 (D. Md. Jul. 25, 2023).
