Is there a specific experience or Black figure you were influenced by during your childhood?
The most impactful Black figures in my life are undoubtedly my parents. They wholeheartedly committed themselves to nurturing a profound sense of pride in our Black identity within my siblings and me. In our household, Blackness embodied beauty, joy, exceptionality, intelligence, and limitless potential. Their teachings have become an integral part of my core beliefs, empowering me to confidently navigate the world despite the challenges or doubts others may try to impose due to my race. Their guidance has been instrumental in propelling me toward my aspirations.
How do you view the importance of diversity and inclusion in today’s workplace?
Diversity ignites innovation and creativity, cultivates a vibrant workplace and most importantly, enables us to better serve our clients. However, inclusion is the linchpin. An inclusive environment doesn’t just invite diverse perspectives but values, hears, and leverages them. Without it, diversity's true value is lost, leaving voices sidelined or silenced and individuals feeling diminished, disconnected, and ostracized. Inclusivity is the key to unlocking individual value, fostering a sense of belonging, and enabling workplaces to truly reap the benefits of a diverse workforce.
What diversity and inclusion changes would you like to see in the future of the legal industry?
In the evolving landscape of the legal profession, several crucial changes stand out: Firstly, there's a pressing need to break down barriers to entry, particularly the financial hurdles associated with attending law school and taking the bar exam. Secondly, fostering a holistic pipeline entails proactive recruitment efforts and robust mentorship programs tailored to underrepresented groups. Lastly, there's a vital call to prioritize the hiring, advancement, and equitable compensation of diverse voices, ensuring fair representation and inclusivity throughout the profession's ranks.
